Google+ Photographers Conference – Registered!

Scott Kelby and the Kelby Media Group are amazing!  They have managed to put together a Photographers Conference in San Francisco centered around all those great people on G+ and the features available on the platform.  The Google+ Photographer’s Conference  is being held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, in San Francisco on May 22-23.  The conference starts off at 3pm the day before with various photo walks around town.

The schedule offers live shoots with Lindsay Adler, Scott Kelby, and Erik Valind!  There are even some options for blind photo critiques, and One-on-One Portfolio reviews!  To have any of the pros that are showing up to teach actually complete a review and provide feedback on your portfolio, that’s just an amazing opportunity!  I look forward to attending Scott Kelbys Photowalk and talking to Trey Ratcliff about some HDR techniques.

Check out the Schedule and even review the list of speakers to review and help you decide what classes you want to attend.  This should be an amazing opportunity for all of us to meet those that inspire us and to learn from them!

Once you review everything check the calendar.  If you register before April 30th you get a discount on the price of the conference!  As soon as you have registered head back over to G+ and Comment on this post of the Google+ Photographers Conference G+ Page so that you can be included in the circle and get to know some people before getting to the conference.

I will be joining the Golden Gate Park Photowalk and look forward to seeing you all there.  I can’t wait to meet everyone and start learning from them!

Baby Showers

It is the season for babies and baby showers again.  Yes, there’s  a season when more children seem to be born than others.  A while back I was hired to photograph a baby shower.  Since I love to get to observe people and photograph I of course welcomed this idea with open arms.  I was told this would be a real baby shower where men are welcome to smoke cigars and there will be no games.  I was not sure what that meant but was happy to go experience this and learn all about it.

When I arrived there were not many people there yet (thank god because I got lost, yes my GPS failed me!).  I took this opportunity to wander around and get the shots of the decorations as people seem to love those shots as well.  This family had put a lot of work into the decorations and making everything just dreamy!  There was a huge set up out in the perfectly manicured back yard, round tables with chairs, table cloths, and each had a center piece similar to the image here.  There was coffee, drinks, cigars, etc.  Everything had chalk boards with the painted pens used to label what was available at each location.  Not only did it look fantastic but I was also jealous of the hand writing (little things right?).

The sun started to go down and more people began to arrive.  The men tended to gather outback around the fire pit and smoke their cigars, it was really more of a cocktail party than a baby shower.  About 30 people arrived and all mingled and congratulated the happy couple on their new addition to the family.  The little boy is going to be very loved by this family, they were all so very happy and excited for his arrival!  I have never been invited to an event where everyone was so welcoming and glad to have someone there to do something for them.

The family also owns a few restaurants and had their waiters cater the event for them.  The food set up was gorgeous as well as delicious.  No, I did not eat the food, but just the smell going through the house was enough to fill you up.  You could smell the different flavors and even imagine the taste of each thing you smelt.  It was really quite an amazing and eloquent event.

The images were rather difficult to get with decent white balance due to the yellow painted walls, candles, and the fact that was dark outside.  With no way to set up lights and no real natural light to work with I was challenged during the processing to get the right white balance back into the images but it was worth the time.  The family was overjoyed with the images I provided and the way in which they were provided.  I of course provided a DVD with print files and web files so they can easily Facebook and also easily print.  I light scribed the event and date onto the disk and purchased a case with an image of the happy couple and date on the front.

I had taken my Domke camera bag with my extra lenses, batteries, and memory cards.  This I tucked back in a hallway out of the way but with easy access to get to and switch lenses.  I had several with me but seemed to only use my 105MM and randomly used my kit lens due to the small space.  This worked out rather well for me though I would love a 50MM prime, but someday I’ll give in and buy one.

Being my first baby shower photography shoot with my D7000 I think I did well and produced photos that the family appreciates as well as providing them in a way that will be a great keepsake.  Just remember to think about the way in which the images are provided after the event as that is the way that you will be remembered.

Tea Party Event at the Jacksonville Landing

Last weekend I made it down to the Jacksonville Landing.  There was a Tea Party event and I thought it might be a good place to work on photographing people and who knows, maybe I would get some good shots.

There were definitely a lot of people people their in all their patriotic gear.  Their was a few people dressed up for re-enactments, or maybe just for the event.  I got a shot of them talking and it looks so odd with the new sunglasses.

There were several people running for office around with tables and providing giveaways.  Some had shirts, stickers, hats, flags, etc.  I was really quite amazed at how much stuff there were giving away to people just for walking by, even if you didn’t seem interested in what they were talking about.

There was Jim Klauder who is running for congress.  I had to take a shot of him holding his informative brochure because I thought the front was great. It actually looks like a government check and across the front it says “insufficient funds”.  I always heard that there wouldn’t be social security anymore when I am finally old enough to collect, but I thought this was a neat idea to draw your attention and make someone stop and think.

Work on Good Friday

I’m still new to the photography world so I was thrilled when I was asked to do company portraits for Oyova!  I spent a little time this afternoon taking pics of the guys standing in front of a white wall.  Several months back I had done the images for the President so I was excited that he thought enough of it to have me come and do the rest of his team.

They are a great set of guys and seemed to have a little fun giving me profile shots, and randomly making faces. I used my best/only portrait lens, my 105MM to take the pics.  Due to the focal length I had to be a ways away.  I can’t wait till Adorama has a 50MM back in stock for me to order.  A fixed lens of that length will be perfect and not require me to be so far away.  I’ll be able to make the experience a more comfortable one as well.

I got the images all converted over (color, black and white), updated, and resized.  They are back out my door and the team seems happy with them!  Hopefully this will lead to more opportunities in the future!

Flowers for a Brighter Day

It’s only Tuesday and it’s already been one of those weeks.  Do you know what I’m talking about?  It’s those weeks where you are getting several days worth of work completed in a single day but there is no end in site.  It seems as though these are very prevalent during holiday weeks.  Yes, Friday is Good Friday, and I’m excited to have it off to spend some time away from the computer and with family and friends.

Last night while I was out playing ball with the dogs I noticed my roses were blooming!  No only did I get to play with my dogs but I ran in the house to grab the camera and get a few shots of the roses.  I think they came out very well and helped to brighten my day a bit…and my week.

These were taken with my Nikon 7000 and my macro 105MM lens.  Hope you enjoy as much as I did.

International Auto Show in New York

I have entered another contest and need everyone’s help!  If my car photo gets the most “likes” then I would be picked for an all expense paid trip to New York to photograph at the International Auto Show!  If you don’t know I grew up around cars and at the car shows.  I still won’t let people clean my car because….they don’t clean them how I was taught.  I helped my dad and his friends build a T-bucket, and I have been there when the car broke down and had to be towed to the nearest town.  I would love the opportunity to go to a show like this, especially to photograph at one.  Please follow the link below and “like” my photo!

This image was taken last fall when my husband and I went to West Virgina for a weekend to hang out in a cabin with his family.  His parents and sister were already there.  Part of the trip for the weekend included going through Smoke Hole Caverns.  it was truly something to see and they had it lit beautifully inside so that I could get some nice photos.

A Barn in Kansas

Growing up there was this barn on the side of the highway by my little town.  It becomes one of those landmarks that lets you know you are close to home.  As I got older and started seeing things a little differently the barn become something more.  I always wanted to go look inside, see what’s there, etc.  Finally, last year at Christmas I asks my Dad to take me out there so I could take some photos.  This only prompted him to say “You mean to XXX’s barn?”  Of course we knew the family that owned it, if only I would have asked earlier.

I was able to get some great images of it with the snow all around, and I have found I am partial to the black and white, that must be how I’ve always seen it in my head as a child.  The barn is nearly 100 years old so I think the black and white is fitting.  For the images below, you can see them larger here.  I used a few presets that I have in Light Room and then of course tweaked them a little, I’m never happy with pre-sets.  I did import a few of them into Topaz BW but I decided that I liked them better straight from Light Room.  Take a look and let me know which one is your favorite.

This is the first image I completed.  This is HDR using Photomatix, I love how the sun turned out…

This is an image of the back of the barn.  Something about how the door was hanging from the hinge and resting on the ground drew my attention.  The red with the sun hitting it was so bright and beautiful!

An image from the side in the snow path of the trucks and tractors.  Just to the right was a huge snow pile that I did clime up a little to get a different perspective.

This image is my favorite.  I used a few presets from Lightroom then  kept tweaking them until I was happy.  something about that old Black and White photo is how I have always seen it in my head.  It gives this image some of that old story and mystery to it.

This is a different Black and White process I did.  I love the sun as the focal point, but you cannot ignore that barn.  I think this makes a unique panorama of the whole place.

I will be putting these up on my fine art america site but I am still looking for another printer that is a little cheaper.  Fine art america charges so much and I get so little as I try to keep the costs reasonable.  If you have suggestions let me know! 🙂

ViewBug Hallway Photo Contest

The winners of the Hallway Photo Contest on ViewBug were announced today.  I did not win, however I did receive honorable mention!

The photo is below but you can also check it out on viewbug.

Eastern State Penn Prison hall

Won Honorary Mention on November 25, 2011

The additional information requested by an provided to ViewBug is as follows.  Once I see the updates on their blog I will link to that as well.

1. Where did you take the photo and what equipment you used (be specific by giving us the technical details)?

Taken in Philly at Eastern State Penitentiary

Nikon D7000 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 lens

ISO 200 – no flash
exposure 1/10 sec at f/5.6
Altered in Lightroom, then made HDR using Photomatix
2. What inspired you to take that shot?
The entire place had a dirty/creepy feel to it but everything we toured through had been cleaned up and didn’t seem to show the history you felt.  At the center there is a central point that 7 hallways all lead out from.  One of them was completely barred off as they had not yet begun renovations on that hall.  Pushing my lens through the bars to just get the hall, and not the bars, I finally saw what I had been feeling during the tour and took several shots.  When editing the image I kept playing with turning it sepia or black and white.  Nothing seemed to fit, then I happened upon the purple hue and it worked.  It kept with the light and airy yet creepy feeling that I had when I was there.

New Orleans National Geographic Photography Workshop

I did go to the National Geographic Photography Workshop in New Orleans on November 10-13.  It was absolutely amazing!  Tyrone Turner and Krista Rossow were great as teachers, mentors, or whatever you want to call them.  They each took personal time above and beyond what was required to help each of us and ensure that they explained everything we had questions about.  Below is a list of tips that I put together from some of the lectures that we had each day that may help all of us a little.

If you check my site under the Places Galleries there is a Gallery for New Orleans, many of my photos are located there.

National Geographic Photography Tips

1. when shooting, take 1 shot and check all the settings for exposure and back of camera. If it looks good, put the camera to your face and don’t take it away. When you look at the back of the camera between shots you go into edit mode an not creative mode.

2. keep looking through the camera always, this allows you to see through it to take the perfect shot.

3. move around a lot, get up, get down, go to the side, etc. You may find a better shot than you initially thought by doing this.

4. When taking people pics, if you talk to them then shoot keep shooting. Don’t just stop. Eventually they will start ignoring you and go back to what they were doing and this is when you get the best pics.

5. People are not scary, you can approach them and talk to them (can you tell I’m from IT for that note? 🙂 )

6. Nat Geo photographers will send in up to 60,000 images when only 20 are needed. Out of 100 images the editors say that there should be 10 good pics and 2-3 amazing ones.

7. zoom with your feet, not your lens.

I think I have really learned a lot about taking images of people and even just altering my f-stop even more.  If you ever have a chance to attend one I would suggest you do, it was an experience I will always remember and something that I would like to do again.  This is a link to all of Photography Workshops that National Geographic offers.  They are all different places and lengths of times, find something that works for you.
